Parent Strategy Sessions

From the outside, your family looks fine. You know something is off.

A Parent Strategy Session is a focused place to slow down, understand what is happening underneath, and figure out what to do about it. For parents worried about a teen, a child, a young adult, or a pattern the whole family keeps repeating.

Offered through Concord Family Counseling in Brentwood, TN, serving families across Williamson County. Available in person or by telehealth when appropriate.

When things look fine, but feel off

You may not need more advice. You may need help seeing the pattern.

Maybe the grades are still good. Maybe the calendar is full. Maybe everyone around you thinks your family is doing well.

But inside your home, something feels different. Your teen is harder to reach. Your child's big feelings are running the house. Your young adult looks capable but feels stuck. You and your partner keep circling the same worry without knowing what to do about it.

A Parent Strategy Session gives you a focused place to slow down, tell the truth about what is happening, and think it through with someone who understands teens, parents, and family systems.

The goal is not to make your family look fine again. The goal is to understand what is happening underneath, and respond to it wisely.
  • Get clear on the worry you are actually trying to solve.
  • See the patterns that keep repeating at home.
  • Decide whether ongoing therapy, parent support, or a focused family intervention fits.

Who this is for

For parents who are carrying the worry.

This is built for parents who can feel that something is wrong and need a thoughtful place to begin.

Your family looks okay from the outside

People may not see the tension, shutdown, conflict, anxiety, or disconnection that lives at home.

You are worried about your teen or young adult

You can tell something is off, but it is hard to know whether to push, back off, or reach for more support.

You want direction before committing to therapy

You may not know who needs therapy, what kind of help fits, or whether a more focused option makes sense.

The same pattern keeps coming back

The conversations, blowups, shutdowns, or worries keep repeating, even when everyone is trying.

You need something more specific than generic advice

You are not looking for a parenting script. You need help thinking through your actual family and the real situation.

You and your partner see it differently

One of you is alarmed, the other is not, and the disagreement has become part of the problem.

What happens in a session

A focused conversation with a clear purpose.

This is not a vague consultation. It is a structured place to slow the situation down and leave with a clearer plan.

1

Tell the story

We start with what you are noticing, what has changed, what you have already tried, and what feels most concerning right now.

2

Name the pattern

We look for the emotional, relational, developmental, and family patterns that may be keeping everyone stuck.

3

Choose what comes next

You leave knowing what to try at home and what kind of support, if any, is the right fit.

What you leave with

Not a perfect answer. A clearer direction.

  • A clearer read on what may be happening underneath the behavior, conflict, or shutdown.
  • Specific ways to respond at home.
  • Language for the hard conversations with your teen, young adult, partner, or family.
  • Guidance on whether therapy, parent support, family counseling, or a more intensive option fits.
  • A calmer sense of what matters most right now.

What this is not

This is not a quick fix or a crisis service.

We will not pretend one session can solve everything. Families are complex. Teens and young adults are complex. Patterns take time to shift.

A Parent Strategy Session is also not a substitute for emergency care, a custody evaluation, legal advice, or ongoing therapy when ongoing therapy is clinically needed.

It is a focused starting point for parents who need clarity, direction, and a steadier way to think about what is happening.

Choose the level of support that fits

Start with strategy. Move into deeper support if you need it.

Some families need one focused conversation. Others need more time to slow the cycle down together.

Frequently asked questions

Questions Williamson County parents ask.

What is a Parent Strategy Session?
It is a focused consultation for parents who are worried about a teen, child, young adult, or a pattern at home and want to understand it before deciding what to do. You meet with Lydia Thompson, walk through what is happening, and leave with a clearer read on the situation and a plan. It is a starting point, not a long-term commitment. Sessions are offered in person at our Brentwood office and online for families across Williamson County.
How do I know if my teen actually needs therapy?
This is the question we hear most. Some of what teenagers do is normal individuation, and some of it is a signal worth paying attention to. The hard part is telling the difference from inside your own family. A strategy session is a low-pressure way to think it through with someone who works with teens every day, so you are not left guessing whether to push, wait, or get more help.
Everything looks fine from the outside. Is that a real reason to reach out?
Yes. Most of the families we see in Brentwood and Franklin look fine on paper. Strong grades, full schedules, capable kids. The worry underneath is quieter than a crisis, and it tends to grow when no one names it. You do not have to wait for things to fall apart to get a clearer read on what is happening.
Can I come on my own, without my teen or child?
Yes, and many parents start exactly this way. You may not be sure your teen is ready, or the concern may involve the whole family rather than one person. Beginning with the parents often makes the right next step clearer for everyone.
Do both parents need to be there?
When possible, yes. We ask both parents or caregivers to attend, because you will both be carrying out whatever comes next, and it helps when you have heard the same conversation rather than a secondhand version of it. We understand this is not always possible. Single parents, separated or divorced co-parents, and other special circumstances are all welcome. Just tell us your situation when you reach out and we will work with it.
How much does a Parent Strategy Session cost?
A Parent Strategy Session is $375 for a two-hour session. Concord Family Counseling is a private-pay practice, so payment is due at the time of service. If a Family Reset Intensive turns out to be the better fit, we will walk you through that pricing when you reach out.
Do you take insurance?
We are private pay and do not bill insurance directly. Lydia can provide a superbill on request, which many families submit toward possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement for a consultation varies by plan, so we are glad to talk it through before you book.
Do we have to commit to ongoing therapy afterward?
No. A strategy session stands on its own. Some parents come once, get the clarity they needed, and take it from there. Others decide that ongoing counseling, family work, or a Family Reset Intensive is the right next step. There is no obligation either way.
What if my teen is already seeing a therapist?
A strategy session can still help. We focus on the home dynamics, the patterns, and how to support the work already underway. With your permission, we can coordinate with the current therapist when that makes sense.
Do you offer sessions in person and online?
Both. Sessions are available in person at our Brentwood office near Cool Springs, and by telehealth for families across Williamson County and throughout Tennessee. Telehealth works well for busy parents and for families in Franklin, Nolensville, and Spring Hill.
What if this is urgent or someone is unsafe?
If someone may be in immediate danger, call 911 or 988, or go to the nearest emergency room. The appointment request form is not monitored for crisis response.
