You are technically an adult now. Nobody handed you the manual.
Counseling for young adults in Brentwood, for the messy in-between years of figuring out who you are and how to do this. In person and by telehealth across Tennessee.
Book a consultation callYoung adult counseling at Concord is led by Lydia Thompson, LPC-MHSP. Lydia works with the emotional and relational parts of launching, including identity, independence, family expectations, boundaries, anxiety, and the experience of feeling stuck between adolescence and adulthood.
Everyone acts like this is supposed to be the best time of your life.
And maybe it does not feel that way at all. You are supposed to have direction, a plan, a major, a relationship, a launch, and half the time you are just trying to get through the week. You are figuring out who you are apart from your family, your hometown, and everything you were told you were supposed to become. That is a lot, and it is happening while everyone your age looks like they already have it handled.
Here is the truth. Struggling right now does not mean you are behind or broken. This stage is genuinely one of the hardest, and almost no one is as sorted as they look. Young adults actually report the highest rates of mental health struggles of any adult age group. You are not the only one. You are just one of the honest ones.
And this space is yours. Not your parents'. Not a place you are being sent to get fixed. A place where you can say the true thing and be taken seriously as the adult you now are.
What we work on together
Identity, values, and what you actually want, not just what you were told to want.
The racing mind, the pressure, and the feeling that it is never quite enough.
Depression, numbness, or losing the motivation you used to have.
Romantic ones, friendships, and learning what you actually need from people.
School, career, and the real fear that comes with choosing a path.
Becoming your own person and setting boundaries without cutting off.
Moving out, moving home, and the nonlinear mess of becoming independent.
Trauma, substance use, disordered eating, and OCD, met with care and without judgment.
If you are the parent reading this
You might be the one who found this page. You are watching someone you love struggle to find their footing, and every instinct says to step in and fix it. That worry is real, and it comes from love.
So here is the honest part, and it matters. Your young adult is an adult now. That means you cannot sign them up for therapy the way you could at fifteen. It only works if they choose it and show up for it. I know that is hard to hear when you just want them to get help.
But there is a lot you can do. You can offer it without forcing it, and make it their decision instead of your ultimatum. And you can get support for your own side of this, because how you show up in this season matters more than you think. My podcast episode The Launch Phase digs into exactly this, for both young adults and the parents supporting them, and you can read more in Launching Your Adult Child.
And when the whole family is tangled up in the launch, a Family Reset Intensive can move a stuck situation further in a few focused days than months of trying on your own.
You can also work directly with me through a Parent Strategy Session when your young adult is not ready for counseling, or when you need help changing your side of the pattern.
You will actually know if it's working
Therapy can feel vague, like you are talking and hoping something shifts underneath. We work differently. We keep the work honest and pointed, so you are never left guessing whether it is helping.
We measure it, not guess it
Brief, proven check-ins track how you are really doing over time, so progress is something you can see, not something you take on faith.
A clear plan, usually by session three
Early on, you leave with a written plan and specific goals, so the work has direction from the start instead of wandering.
Goals that keep up
We revisit and update those goals as things change, so the focus stays on what actually matters right now.
The measures never replace the relationship. They serve it, helping us catch what is not working early enough to change it.

You are welcome here, exactly as you are
Whoever you are and whatever you are working through, identity, sexuality, faith, family, or the things you have not said out loud yet, this is a safe, affirming place. No judgment and no agenda. Just real support while you figure out your own life.
Young adults may also work with Halle Brandt at a lower rate. Halle is a graduate counseling intern practicing under Lydia's supervision.
The first step can be yours.
You do not have to have it figured out to reach out. The first step is a short, free call, and it can be your call to make. If you are a parent, it is a good place to start too.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is therapy built for the specific stretch of life between about 18 and 25, when you are individuating, figuring out who you are apart from your family, and navigating identity, relationships, direction, and the launch into adulthood. It makes room for the anxiety, low mood, and big transitions that so often come with this stage.
You can absolutely help. What you cannot do is enroll them the way you could when they were a minor, because they are an adult now and the work only takes hold when they choose it. The most useful thing you can do is offer it without forcing it, and get support for your own side of the season. Our episode The Launch Phase and the post Launching Your Adult Child are good places to start, and a Family Reset Intensive can help when the whole family is stuck.
Yes. As an adult, your therapy is confidential. What you share stays between you and your therapist, with the standard legal exceptions around safety. Even if a parent is helping with scheduling or payment, the work itself is yours and private.
A relaxed, no-pressure conversation. We get to know you, hear what has been going on, and start figuring out what you want to be different. You do not need to have it all sorted out or know exactly what to say. That is what we are here to help with.
Yes. This is a formative, changeable stage of life, which makes it a powerful time to do this work. Support now can ease what you are struggling with and build skills and self-understanding that carry into the rest of your adult life.
Yes. We offer secure telehealth to clients located anywhere in Tennessee, which makes it easy to stay consistent through busy semesters, breaks, and a schedule that does not always cooperate.
